Rainmeter/Dock Guide Empty Rainmeter/Dock Guide

Post by odsmk on Thu Oct 21, 2010 9:00 am

Well, I am going to make a thread on it.

I started off with this:
https://2img.net/h/oi54.tinypic.com/2uo2zv5.jpg

Anyways, first we will start with finding a good wallpaper.

I find all of mine from http://boards.4chan.org/wg/

Now, before you go straight there make sure you only click "Wallpapers/General".

If you click almost any other section (mainly directed at "Random" AKA /b/) you will end up with trolls and fucked up porn.

About 4chan:
4chan is pretty much a huge forum for pictures. They have sexual sections, random ones, .gif, and many more.

/wg/ AKA Wallpapers/General is pretty much based on wallpaper threads and desktop picture threads. You may ALWAYS ask someone for their desktop wallpaper. If they do not respond, or you are in a hurry, try www.tineye.com

TinEye:
Pretty much you link or upload a picture and they find the original. Not always great, gives a blurry pictures a lot.

---------------------

Once you find a good wallpaper that suits you then begin with docks.

www.rocketdock.com
www.stardock.com/products/objectdock

I personally like rocketdock better. It's just easier for me. But pretty much they are the same thing.

Okay, next click download. (I will guide you through rocketdock, since I don't have objectdock downloaded)

Once you have it downloaded and it's running, try dragging your firefox, chrome, or other browser icon onto it. You will be able to place it where ever you want on the dock. You can also move it around on the dock.

If you right click the dock, you can get a whole little list of options. Add item will allow you to add separators, recycling bins, and more. Test em out, they are normally useful.

Also screen position, to put it on the bottom, top, left, or right sides of your screen.

Other things in the right click will be described below.

Next, you can right click anywhere on the dock and then click dock settings for a whole shit load of settings for you to work with!

GENERAL

-Select language
-Run at startup
*This will make it so whenever you turn on your computer, the dock will appear where it last was automatically!
-Store Settings in a Portable INI (single-user)
*Not really sure what this does, you can test it and see for yourself if you want! Razz
-Minimize Windows to the Dock
*This will make it when you minimize windows, or the like _ [] X (first one) if you are on windows. It will go to right/bottom end of the dock. But for some reason recently rocketdock has been gay and whenever you minimize windows it goes to the dock, but appears blank. Sorta weird, I just let things fall to my taskbar instead.
-Running Application Indicators
*Not sure, test for yourself.
-Open Running Application Instance
*Not sure, test for yourself.
-Lock Items
*SUGGESTED. Once you have all your icons where you want them on the dock, then click lock items. This will make it so you can't accidentally drag the icon off the dock or move one on accident.

ICONS

Quality is the first one, it really doesn't make a difference. Low Quality says faster, so I suggest putting that one since they all look the same in my eyes.

Opacity is like how transparent you want the icons.

Next is Size. You can make them from really really small to really big.

Hover Effect is what is already on there. When you put your mouse over the icon and it bubbles up and the ones around it to. You can adjust how much the zoom in, how many icons down they zoom (width) and how fast they zoom.

Bubble - Makes the x (width) icons around it bubble up in a circle formation.
Plateau - Makes the x (width) come up and make a small flat surface, e.g. Plateau.
Flat - Makes the x (width) come up and they are all on the same level.

Zoom Opaque makes it so, say you have them half transparent and then you hover, then they become 0 transparency. Test it!

*Note
To put custom icons, right click the one you want to change and click icon settings and find your icon. First put the custom icon into the folder: Computer\C\ProgramFiles\Rocketdock\Icons

You may find custom icons at deviantart.com -> customize -> icons -> dock icons

STYLE

Select a theme! It comes with a big varity, but you can always find more on deviantart or somewhere else.

Deviantart.com -> customize -> skins and themes -> application launches -> rocketdock.

To apply a skin, first put it in: Computer\C\ProgramFiles\Rocketdock\Skins
Then it will appear until Themes in the style category.

Next, you can have icon lables. You can use any font with it. Just select the font. You can give it a little shadow, and also outline. If you want a custom font, I suggest going to dafont.com and looking for a font of your interest.
*Check out: http://www.madstory.org/general-discussion-f29/dafontcom-t1043.htm
This thread will teach you how to use a custom font.

You can adjust outline/shadow transparency in the two settings below.

BEHAVIOR

Icon Attention Effect is say you have your chat with your girlfriend Cindy and then she messages you on your msn (which may be minimized to the dock) and it will make it either just bounce, or "uber icon effect". This one just makes it so it doesn't bounce or something.. Not really different from None.

Next, you can autohide your dock. This will just put it hidden under the screen, and when you put your cursor over the bottom part of the screen it will pop out.

---------------------

Ahh, rainmeter. This is really a big thing, but I am going to keep it short. I'm not teaching how to code or anything.

First, download it from http://code.google.com/p/rainmeter/downloads/list
Pick the one that most applies to you, normally within the first few.

Next, when it opens you will get a bunch of stuff. You can just close skin on em all if you don't like it.

Upload new skins from:
Customize.org/rainmeter
Or deviantart.com -> customize -> skins and themes -> system monitoring -> rainmeter

Customize.org has all the classic skins, deviant has new ones.

Once you download a skin, take it out of the .rar/.zip file and move it to My Documents\Rainmeter\Skins folder. Once in there, refresh ALL and then right click rainmeter, rainmeter menu, configs, and find it in there.

Once you have what you want, you can click settings for the particular item (e.g. clock).
They are all pretty self explanatory, but my suggestion is almost NEVER click "click through". You then can't move it or right click it or anything. You have to manually get rid of it and it sucks.

Everything else is self explanatory, if you want to edit the particular item, click "Edit Skin...". This is where coding comes in. Since this is not a guide for coding, you will have to figure things out on your own.

*If you are trying to use a weather thing, you just need to go to weather.msn.com , type in your zip code, click the RSS in the corner (google image RSS if you want to know what it looks like) and replace the little code in the Edit Skin on the weather.
E.g.
URL=http://xoap.weather.com/weather/local/2348BBH3?cc=*&dayf=6
Find the code in your weather RSS link that looks like it could replace "2348BBH3". Then just copy that little code, and replace the one in the URL="Link".
For example, mine would change to
URL=http://xoap.weather.com/weather/local/USMN0664?cc=*&dayf=6

---------------------

That is all I have for you. Hope this helped at least someone, if you have any further or additional questions feel free to ask below. I will get to the questions ASAP, and if I can't answer I will tell you what I know. No questions about coding in this thread, aside from weather since that is complicated. If you have a question about coding, feel free to PM me.

If you figure out everything, your desktop could look like this:
Spoiler:
Rainmeter/Dock Guide 42

Once you are done with your now pro/epic desktop, post it here!

Meh, it is just nice to close out something and see a desktop worth looking at.

And besides, it can tell you more then just time.
Weather
A-Z drive
Ram
CPU %
Recycling Bin Amount

And then there are "RSS" which are really nice. Like it will tell you what are the last posts in a thread on the forums, who posted on your wall in FB, that new episode of anime you've been waiting for, anything. xD

It also does a shit load more, and the better you become with coding the more you can make it do. It can do pretty much anything if you have combined skills GFX + Coding.
